Keeping Your Kitchen Drains Running Smoothly

Let’s face it, there is never a good time for any sort of plumbing problem and plugged drains are the most common and frustrating of them all. While a slow moving or plugged drain may not constitute an emergency, when your shower doesn’t drain fully or the kitchen sink backs up, it is a nuisance for you and your family. We’re going to discuss drains in other areas of the house in future articles, but for now, let’s focus on how to keep your kitchen drains running smoothly.

First and foremost, never pour grease down your drain and always use a drain strainer! Grease builds up in your pipes and then food scraps attach to the grease forming a clog. The goal is to keep as much grease, oil, food scraps and other matter out of your drains as possible.

We recommend using a plastic container, to pour excess cooking grease and oil into (discarded peanut butter containers work great), refrigerate and then dispose of in your trash.

Be especially careful when peeling vegetables, consider peeling them over the trash can, it saves you the extra step of cleaning out the sink after you’re through and as tempting as it is to dump those coffee grinds in there, don’t do it ! Vegetable peels and coffee grinds are common ingredients found in a kitchen sink clog.

If you have a garbage disposal, for a fresh, natural way to eliminate odors, grind several lemon peels; for a quick cleaning, grind a tray of ice cubes. Crisafulli Bros. does not recommend using commercial drain products in your garbage disposal.
