Smoke detectors are critical pieces of safety technology. Fire is an unfortunately all-too-common threat for homeowners, and there may be no bigger threat to your safety than a fire burning out of control while you are unaware. Whether it’s in the middle of the night while you’re asleep, while you’re on the other side of the house, or while you aren’t home at all, smoke detectors are always on the lookout and rapidly alert you so that you can take action. Whether you’re looking to install a new smoke detector or you need to have an old smoke detector replaced, the Albany electricians at Crisafulli Bros. New Smoke Detector Installation
There are two primary types of smoke detectors: battery-powered and hard-wired smoke detectors. Battery-powered detectors are generally more popular because they are simpler to install. However, installing them in the wrong place can greatly limit the amount of protection they provide. That’s why we always advise leaving your smoke detector installation to professionals. At Crisafulli Bros. Plumbing & Heating Contractors, Inc., our highly-trained team members always make sure to place your detectors in compliant locations to provide optimal protection throughout your home.
New York law requires you to have a smoke detector in all of the following locations:
- In any interior renovations, alternations, or additions
- Within each sleeping room on each story
- Outside of each bedroom within 15 feet of the door of that bedroom (one alarm can serve multiple bedrooms in this case)
- On each additional story of a dwelling, including basements and finished attics
- On any story having a carbon monoxide source (gas furnaces, fireplaces, gas water heaters)
Whether your smoke detector is battery-powered or hard-wired, both should be replaced entirely every ten years. After a while, smoke detectors lose their ability to properly protect you by detecting smoke in the air, and thus they can’t be counted on to alert you when something goes wrong. If your smoke detectors have not been changed in close to a decade, we strongly advise having our team inspect and change them out for you.
Law-Compliant Smoke Detector Units
On April 1, 2019, a new law went into effect in the state of New York that changed how we set up and utilize smoke detectors. Perhaps the most drastic change is that all new smoke detectors as well as replacements for previous detector units must be either hardwired into your electrical system or equipped with a sealed, non-replaceable 10-year battery. At Crisafulli Bros. Plumbing & Heating Contractors, Inc., we install compliant smoke detectors wherever they are needed around your home. Whether we need to install electrical wiring to ensure your detectors are always powered or you’re simply looking for someone to properly place your detector unit, we’ll make sure the job gets done right.
